8 June 1997 - Cotwolds Trail - Pensulvania to Hawkesbury Upton

Woke at 0730. The owner lady brought tea to drink out on a tray - free of charge.

Got on the trail at 0900. Mid-morning met an English guy who walked with us for a couple of miles. (Didn't get his name.) Had lunch at teh Avon CC Depot. No success in ringing Nicky.

Walking along through Old Sodbury, could see five minutes away the rain sweeping across the landscape. Lookig for shelter, we noticed Old Sodbury Church right there next to us. Hoping for sanctury there ran to the solid front doors, which were thankfully open. This let us into a small two metre square entry chamber which provided excellent shelter from the 1hr thunderstorm. The next doors opened into the church proper. Inside was very serene. Back out in the entry room we had lunch and I played harmonica till the rain stopped. Then we looked around the churchyard and took a few photo snaps.

In the late afternoon around Horton Court we missed a turn. With the compass I got us heading in basically the right direction, but directed us up a really steep hill - for which I owe Kathryn a beer. Met a resident as we walked along their fenceline. They were kind enough to point us in the best direction.

Nearly lost my rain jacket I had just purchased. A car driving by slowed to ask if a jacket they had seen could be ours, and it was mine. It had been wedged behind the long vertical straps and I never noticed it missing. Started walking back. A family was leaving the motorcross track in van so I ran to catch it and managed to hitch a lift back down the road - about one whole kilometre. Got it, jogged back to Kathryn and continued on our way. The lesson: done attach loose items behind the long vertical straps.

Finished the day at 1700 at the Duke of Beaufort pub, we found out the dismal cricket score and met Dick who was deaf and blind and randy. Behind the Beaufort was a cricket oval. With the tent pitched on the edge cook dinner and turned in for the night - playing my harmonica some.
